What happens when your pet is admitted?

If your pet needs to come into the surgery for an operation, investigation or dental procedure...

Bringing in your pet

You will have an appointment with the vet first thing in the morning, so that they can give your pet a check over – listen to their heart, check their temperature etc, and discuss any concerns you may have. They will also give your pet the first part of their pre-medication – a sedative that will start to make them feel relaxed and sleepy.

They will then be taken through to the kennel room. Once in here they will be given a comfy bed, and if the vet has requested then they may be placed on an intravenous drip and blood samples taken that may be necessary. They will also be given the second part of their pre-medication – a painkiller. They will be left in quietly in their kennel to let the pre-medication drugs take effect.

The operation

Operations start around mid-morning. Your pet will be given their anaesthetic and the procedures carried out as necessary.

Once the operation has finished, your pet will be taken back to their kennel, and covered with a blanket to keep them warm. They will be monitored throughout their recovery by a nurse. Once they are awake, they will be left to fully recover from their anaesthetic before they can go home. Once your pet has recovered from their anaesthetic we send you an SMS message to let you know how they are doing.

Once they are awake all our patients are given water to drink, and once dogs can stand they are taken outside for a short walk. All our patients are carefully looked after and monitored throughout their stay by the nurses.

Collecting your pet

When you drop your pet off first thing in the morning you will be given a discharge appointment to come and collect them. This is usually between 3.30 and 5.00pm, with either a vet or a nurse. They will go through any special instructions with you and give you feeding advice etc. If your pet has stitches in they will need to be removed usually 10 – 14 days post operatively, or if your pet has had a dental procedure you will be asked to return in 10 -14 days time do that we can check the mouth and teeth and make sure everything is healing up OK.
